Ed "Big Daddy" Roth needed a mascot to promote his custom car kits and art brand, so he created a grotesque green/grey rat with wild eyes and sharp teeth-an intentional opposite for that other wholesome "family style" mouse, which Roth detested. Rat fink is a character not even a mother could love - crazy eyes, warped body, gaping mouth, and greasy overalls, emblazoned with his "R.F." initials.
 
Rat Fink, immediately caught on after appearing in a Car Craft magazine ad in 1963, showing up on shirts, toys, stickers, and much more.
